The Tiger and The Snow
Italian funny man Roberto Benigni and real life sweetheart Nicoletta Braschi star in this poignant and sweet romcom/drama about a man who marries the perfect woman every night in his dreams, and how he finally wins her over once he sees her by the light of day. Bonus appearance by Tom Waits. This movie definitely did not suck.

Frozen
Okay, so I am not one that scares easily but this movie had me jump up and cover my eyes like a 3 year old in a Krueger premier. Picture this, 3 friends, stuck on a ski-lift in the middle of the night in the dead of winter. It’s freezing, it’s snowing and the slopes are closed for the next 5 days. 50 minutes in and I’m scared shitless. Do this to yourself!

Mother
When a developmentally disabled teen is accused of murder, his protective mother sets out to prove him innocent. Corrupt bureaucracy, inept lawyering, and under-the-table acupuncture ensue. Kind of Coen Brothers-esque, except without the budget and in Korean.

The Chaser
A Korean thriller about a serial killer who ensnares prostitutes.  The film has  a wonderful anti-hero in the pimp who is an ex-cop and finds his employees are vanishing.  He must return to his sleuthing ways to unravel the mystery.  It’s a violent movie and unlike American films of the genre in that has a much more down and dirty visceral feeling-and no happy endings.  The chase is not a...

Restrepo
Great documentary about soldiers in the most dangerous part of Afghanistan. Really touching and provides a first hand look into what soldiers have to deal with on a daily basis. Likely to get nominated for an Oscar.

Tell No One
I read this book probably 7-8 years ago and it was a very compelling read. I saw it on Instant Netflix not even knowing anyone had adapted it and found it was a French movie. Watched it anyway and they did a great job. It’s a very well done, modern-day French noir/thriller film that keeps you enthralled throughout. Nothing is as ever as good as the book, but this definitely does it...
